Maiapilo native flower blooms

Lava Desert OrchidAloha! I found this amazing delicate flower, Maiapilo, in the middle of the lava near the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Area but closer to Pinetrees in Kailua Kona. It is about 8 miles north of Kona on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway.

It is amazing such a beautiful flower can be found in such a desolate location! We were hanging out down at Ooma Beach exploring around Pinetrees and the golf course they put in down there and on the way out we noticed this amazing flower!Lava Flow

The Lava created beautiful Keiki Tide pools all along the coast line that protect these gentle pools from surf and waves. Keiki is the word Hawaiians use for “children”. Ooma Beach has become one of our favorite picnic spots because of the close proximity to Kona. They have great wading ponds and you can swim and it’s not packed with tourists! A lot of locals though with tons of Aloha! We hope you liked our post! Follow us on Social Media! -Ryan
